Pool areas are tough to landscape around. The beds need to follow the curves of the patio, the plants have to hold their shape without getting overgrown, and the mulch has to stay put through rain and foot traffic. This Holland, PA property had all of that going on - a large freeform pool and spa surrounded by sweeping planting beds that needed a full refresh.
We came in and cleaned out the beds, re-edged the borders where the turf meets the mulch, and topped everything with a fresh layer of dark mulch throughout. The ornamental grasses along the pool edge are the kind of plants that look great when the beds are tight and clean - they kind of disappear when the mulch gets thin and weedy. Fresh dark mulch makes those grasses pop again.
Out front, we did the same thing. The entry beds around the paver driveway got a full top-dress of black mulch. The river rock accents and the existing plantings were all worked around carefully - nothing got buried or pushed out of place. That front entry is the first thing anyone sees, and a clean bed with fresh mulch makes a real difference in how the whole house reads from the street.
One thing we're always mindful of on a job like this is consistency. The mulch color, depth, and edge definition should look the same whether you're standing at the front door or looking out from the back deck. When different areas of a property are maintained at different levels, it shows. We treat the whole property as one cohesive space, not just a checklist of spots to fill in.
Homes in Holland and throughout Bucks County tend to have mature landscapes with a lot of layered plantings. Keeping those beds looking sharp isn't complicated - it just takes regular attention and the right eye for clean edges and proper mulch depth. This one came out exactly how it should.
